- February 5-7. Minnesota Society of American Foresters and The Wildlife Society joint annual meeting: Making a Place for Prescribed Fire in Managing Minnesota Ecosystems - Overcoming Technical, Social, and Cultural Barriers.
Ruttgers Sugar Lake Lodge, Grand Rapids, MN.
- Fire in Minnesota is a natural occurrence that has burned forests for thousands of years. Many plants and ecosystems depend on this natural disturbance to regenerate and maintain healthy processes and functions. However, prescribed burning of forested ecosystems has played a relatively small role in Minnesota’s forest management programs.
This conference will present information on the:
- History and ecology of fire in Minnesota’s ecosystem;
- Opportunities and barriers to prescribed burning
- Technical sessionsregarding fire in Minnesota
- A panel discussion regarding barriers to prescribed fire
- An ACTION PLAN for both professional groups to take back to members for moving prescribed burning forward in Minnesota

- March 26. Making Your Voice Heard: Improving the Effectiveness of Natural Resource Communication.
UMN Cloquet Forestry Center, Cloquet, MN.
-
This workshop is an opportunity for you to practice communicating to
others on natural resource subjects that you really care about!
We will cover communication tools that include methods to improve
public speaking and writing skills, use of the internet, and how to
build Powerpoint presentations. Each of you will work in a small
group and be encouraged to give presentations in two formats,
selecting from what is covered during the morning sessions. You are
encouraged to do some preparation before the workshop about one or
more topics to use for these presentations.
**This workshop is supported by an information and education grant
from the Minnesota Forest Stewardship Program. Approved Stewardship
Plan writers may register at a reduced registration fee of $40.

April 2008
April 2. POSTPONED - New date TBA
Large Scale Wind and Fire in Northern Minnesota Forests.
UMN Cloquet Forestry Center, Cloquet, MN.
- Significant wind and fire disturbances have preoccupied forest resource managers in recent years. Starting with the 1999 "July 4th" windstorm and continuing with the subsequent fires at Cavity and Ham Lakes in areas of this blowdown, these events have motivated us to revisit Minnesota's characteristic natural disturbance agents to better understand the forests we manage and enjoy. During this workshop you will hear presentations on current wind and fire research and have the opportunity to engage in discussion and small-group exercises with Dr. Lee Frelich and Dr. Roy Rich.
Specific presentations
- Historical fire in northern Minnesota
- An update on the 1999 blowdown and forest response – tree mortality and landscape changes
- What do we know about derechos (large-scale windstorms)?
- Prescribed burns in the 1999 blowdown, and their effects on fuel and the forest
- The Cavity Lake and Ham Lake Wildfires, their occurrence and early impacts, predictions of their long-term impacts on the forest, and research underway.
