| Third North American Forest Ecology Workshop June 24-27, 2001 Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center Duluth, Minnesota, USA |
The conference will be held in the new addition to the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC) with views of the Duluth Harbor, Aerial Lift Bridge, Park Point and Lake Superior. Within easy walking distance from the DECC and conference hotels are the Great Lakes Aquarium (location of the conference banquet), Bayfront Festival Park, the William A. Irvin Great Lakes Steamer, and three miles of sandy, public beach along Park Point.
The proximity of Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes, modifies the local weather, causing cooler summer and warmer winter temperatures and lower frequency of severe storms. The average June temperatures range from 5-20 C (low 40’s to upper 60’sF). Downtown Duluth is famous for being ‘cooler by the lake.’ In other words, pack a sweater!
Duluth is located in Northeastern Minnesota at the terminus of Interstate Highway 35, about 240 km (150 miles) north of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. It is serviced by Northwest and Mesaba Airlines. There are numerous daily flights from Detroit and Minneapolis/St. Paul to Duluth. Bus service is also available from Minneapolis and St. Paul. There is no rail service to Duluth.
Ground transportation from the airport to hotels is available via taxi. The fare is approximately $13. Cars may also be rented at the airport from all the major car rental companies (e.g. Avis, Hertz, National).
Referred to by some as the San Francisco of the Midwest, Duluth is located at the far western end of Lake Superior, and is a busy international port. Beautiful during any season of the year, the area offers a rich cultural life along with a multitude of year-round recreational activities such as sailing, fishing, hiking, canoeing, and skiing. Duluth is also the gateway to the spectacular North Shore of Lake Superior with one of the most scenic drives in the United States.
