Issues of Scale -- From Theory to Practice

Over the past decade, issues of scale have emerged as a new Frontier in forest ecology and management. New technologies have revolutionized our ability to study and manage forest ecosystems at multiple scales. New research has focused on larger scale patterns and processes.

It has become clear that results of studies at one scale may not be valid at other scales. Increasingly, researchers are focusing on understanding linkages between processes that operate at different scales. Managers are also grappling with how to consider these linkages in management. Finally, both scientists and managers recognize the effect of human activities, and the cumulative impacts that small-scale actions may have on larger-scale patterns and processes.

This workshop will bring together ecologists and managers to highlight and expand upon the state-of-the-art in understanding scale issues in forest ecology and management.

Papers will be presented for the following topics:

  • Scale Linkages - From Trees to Stands
  • Scale Linkages - From Stands to Landscapes
  • Measuring & Monitoring Forest Ecosystem Health
  • Interactions Between Spatial Patterns and Forest Flora and Fauna
  • Non-timber Forest Products
  • Understanding Forest / Surface Water Interactions
  • Spatial Assessment and Decision Tools for Managing Forest Landscapes
  • Managing Forests at Regional Scales

For more information about the conference, please contact Louise Yount, 218-879-0858. Registration information is available here.

This workshop is sponsored by: Society of American Foresters, Ecological Society of America, North Central Research Station - USFS, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and University of Minnesota.
