2017 Webinar: Life Cycle Assessment – An Essential Tool for Determining Environmental Impacts

stacked logs

Accurate determination of environmental impacts linked to products, and associated raw material procurement and manufacturing processes, requires the use of definitive, scientifically-based tools in accordance with rigorous universal standards. Environmental life cycle assessment, or LCA, has become the tool of choice for determination of impacts.

Sometimes referred to as “cradle to grave” analysis, LCA provides a mechanism for systematically evaluating environmental impacts and in informing strategies for impact reduction. LCA-based information not only provides insights into the environmental impacts of product manufacture, but also in regard to use, maintenance and end-of-product-life. Because of the systematic nature of LCA and its power as an evaluative tool, the use of LCA is increasing as environmental performance becomes more and more important in society.

It is important to recognize that landscape impacts are not included among the environmental impact factors evaluated through LCA. Consequently, LCA does not eliminate the need for use of assessment methods such as forest certification that provide for site-specific evaluation of raw material procurement activity.
